Nathanial Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. Deeply influenced by the Romantic movement, his work includes The Scarlet Letter (1850), The Marble Faun (1860), 'Wakefield' (1835) and 'Feathertop' (1862). Praised for his purity of style, his wild and plaintive tone and his deep exploration into universal themes, Hawthorne is considered one of the greatest and most original, of the American novelists.
