Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known as Mark Twain, was an American novelist and humourist. A prolific writer, he is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884). His work, combining humour, social criticism and the use of colloquial language, laid the foundations for a distinct American literature, which had not been present before his time.
