The Good Woman of Setzuan (B K Classics) Paperback – 22 February 2026
The Good Woman of Setzuan is a play by Bertolt Brecht that explores the conflict between goodness and survival in a corrupt society. The story is set in the city of Setzuan, where three gods search for a truly good person. They find Shen Teh, a kind-hearted but poor prostitute, and reward her with money to start a better life. She opens a tobacco shop, but her generosity leads others to exploit her. To protect herself, Shen Teh invents a ruthless alter ego, Shui Ta, who manages her business strictly and efficiently. Through this dual identity, Brecht highlights how society makes it difficult for a person to remain good. The play ends without a clear solution, urging the audience to reflect critically on social injustice and moral responsibility.
