Until one day, it all ended.<br>Rajendra Narayan became the first ruler of a princely state to sign the merger agreement for accessioninto the Union of India in December 1947. Led by his example, other princely states followed suit.He discarded his princely duties and left Patna State, planning to live a simple life in a Himalayancave. But fate had other plans.<br>His people beseeched him to return and take charge of state politics.<br>Throughout his political career, he was lovingly addressed as Maharaja by his people, subordinatesand even other political figures of the time. His legacy of reforming the socio-economic and culturalethos of Odisha and its governance both as Maharaja of Patna and later as a parliamentarian andchief minister of Odisha in the 1960s is an extraordinary tale of service, political acumen andintellectual brilliance.

About the Author

Prof. Pabitra Mohan Nayak is a recipient of the prestigious Odisha Sahitya Academy Award and has served as registrar in Sambalpur and Berhampur universities. He has chaired two sessions of the Commonwealth Conference at Austria in 1993 and written extensively for national and international journals and publications. He is the author of popular English language works titled The Voice of Silence, Impact of Chauhan Rule on Orissan History and Culture and Inscriptions of Odisha. His works can be accessed in several distinguished libraries in the world. He has also translated several books into Odia including Kahlil Gibran�s The Prophet and R.L. Stevenson�s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. With his illustrious academic record, Prof. Nayak was a member of the executive committee of the All India University Administrators Association in 1997. Vijay Raj Singh is an Indian author and entrepreneur. He has written on Indian politics and public policy including quickread books Silence of Thunder (2018), The Art of Being Ahead (2019) and several editorials for the national mainline daily The Statesman.
