Earthquake Precursors in the Atmosphere and Ionosphere: New Concepts Hardcover – Import, 2 January 2023

Sergey Pulinets . Springer . English

This book discusses how the increased emanation of radon and other gases from the Earth’s crust in the vicinity of active tectonic faults triggers a chain of physical processes and chemical reactions in the atmospheric boundary layer and the Earth’s ionosphere over an earthquake area several days/hours before strong seismic shocks occur. It presents the two main concepts involved in this mechanism: atmosphere ionization and the global electric circuit. The Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) concept is strongly supported by experimental data showing the atmospheric and ionospheric precursors for major recent earthquakes including 2004 Sumatra; 2008 Sichuan, China; 2011 Tohoku, Japan; and 2015 Nepal. The book not only addresses the theoretical considerations but also includes information on experimental techniques used for precursor observations based on the space-borne systems. Providing practical methods of precursor identification and interpretation, it is an excellenttextbook for graduate courses in geophysics, earthquake science, atmospheric physics and remote sensing. Moreover, it offers a wealth of information for scientists and experts from governmental and international agencies working in the fields of natural-disaster mitigation, response and recovery.

About the Author

Dimitar Ouzounov received his Ph.D. in Geophysics in 1990 at the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. After a period as a Researcher at the Academy of Science in Bulgaria, he became a Research Scientist at NASA Godard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. Dimitar developed a new methodology for the analysis of transient thermal radiation in the atmosphere associated with earthquakes and geodynamics processes from space. Currently, he is a Research Professor at Chapman University, Orange, CA, USA. Since 2004 he has been studying the processes of the Earth’s lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling in order to obtain a new understanding of the geospheres’ interactions associated with lithosphere processes, pre-earthquake phenomena, and other major natural hazards. In geophysics, he is recognized for developing an interdisciplinary sensor-web methodology for study the pre-earthquake processes. In the field of Earth Science, he contributed to the development of a new paradigm of satellite monitoring of Earth’s radioactivity processes for Disaster applications. He is the author of about two hundred papers and conference proceedings. He has also co-authored a series of three books on Pre-Earthquake processes, Geosphere coupling, and earthquake warnings.
